Jumping on the Nutrition Bandwagon

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

by Marcus Barton

Many of my MelRad teammates have blogged about nutrition and how important good nutritional habits are vitally important to your sport of choice, especially triathlons.  Well, I’m jumping on the bandwagon with this post and catching the proverbial piggy-back ride of my teammates.

Leading into a race weekend, we all think about every aspect of our training.  Did I put in enough quality miles?  Did I swim enough?  Did yesterday’s run really feel that bad?  Did I eat the right foods?

As you can see, like my teammates, nutrition ranks right up there with every other aspect of training and race preparation.  However, I’m not here to drone on about lean proteins, quality carbohydrates and healthy fats.  You’ve already done your research on all of that, right?  Don’t look at your computer monitor with that strange look.  You know what you need to do there.  Put down the sweets, quit eating those refined carbos, and stay away from that deep fried, chocolate-covered bacon on a stick.

Instead, I want to talk about vitamin supplements.  We, as triathletes, burn lots and lots of calories during our training regimens.  This results in us eating lots of food to restore those burnt cals.  Even though you may be eating well (as mentioned previously), you may still be missing some key nutrients in your diet.  This is especially true for those of you that are using your triathlon “kick” as a ride on the weight-loss train.  If you’re training to also lose weight, then you are probably cutting calories in an effort to burn more than you consume.  You, my friend, are in DIRE need of nutritional supplementation.

Digging through my stash of magazines in my bath… uh… reading room, I came across an excellent article in Bicycle Magazine.  It mentioned “15 Proven Ways to Get Faster.”  In that article, number 9 was:

“Recent research suggests that active people who are low in B vitamins such as B6, B12, folate and riboflavin don’t perform their best and may have trouble building muscle and producing oxygen—carrying red blood cells. During hard training, load up on B nutrients, which are essential for converting protein and carbs to energy and for repairing cells, by eating plenty of whole grains, dark-green veggies and low-fat dairy. Pop a daily multivitamin or start the day with a fortified cereal for extra insurance.”

Yet another article in another issue also mentions Vitamin D and Antioxidants.  These are only but a few of the very important things that should also be part of your diet.  Even though I only mention these two articles, there are plenty of reliable sources of information that will back it up.

So how and what should you be looking for in a good supplementation to your diet?  My personal recommendation is USANA’s HealthPak.  Here’s a couple of reasons why:

First, it’s easy.  The HealthPak comes presorted with the right nutrients in individual packets.  The packets also come with an AM and PM packet neatly attached.  For someone on the go like me, it makes it pretty easy to toss a packet in my pocket on my way to work or a bunch when heading out of town (like this weekend).  No fuss, no muss.

Second, it’s easy.  Yep, I said it again.  No guesswork about which multi-viatamins, antioxidant, or other supplement to buy.  Ever been to one of those vitamin shops with walls and walls of vitamins?  Which do you choose?  With the HealthPak, they’re chosen, presorted, and pre-packed for me.

Lastly, it’s the right nutrition.  Each packet comes with the following supplements:

  • 2 Mega Antioxidants
  • 2 Chelated Minerals
  • 1 Active Calcium
  • 1 AO Booster

Each pack contains the following vitamins: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin D , Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folate, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, & Manganese.  (see this detailed list of vitamins and quantities).

Although vitamins are no substitute for healthy eating habits, they can take your nutrition (and your racing) to the next level.  So even if you already have healthy eating habits, you should try USANA.  If you don’t already have healthy eating habits, get with the program, chump. (grin)

Just a note of caution:  You know your own dietary needs.  Even though I’m not a dietician, I am a triathlete like you with a goal of being the best that I can.  So in the process of doing so, I have researched nutrition quite a bit myself, including recommendations from a licensed dietician.  I implore you to do you’re own research to find out what nutrition is right for you and/or speak to a registered dietician.

Be a Warrior!

Or when you are dreaming of hot weather. And it’s not caffeinated - you’ll have to get your fix somewhere else but there’s still plenty of power in there to keep you going. Product Review: NATHAN Trail Mix hydration belt.

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

nathan10_trailmix1By Emma Garrard: Professional triathlete/mountain biker/trail runner

I live in Park City where the air is super dry and I’m at high altitude so staying hydrated on long runs is essential. I can think of one too many times when my runs have been longer than anticipated and I’ve got stuck without hydration. We all know this isn’t fun, I start to get light headed, run slower, and run the risk or tripping over a rock or twisting an ankle.

That’s why I’ve been bringing the NATHAN Trail Mix hydration belt along with me when I hit the trails. This means I can stay hydrated and therefore run faster and benefit more from my training sessions.

Most of my long runs are more than 90 min but not more than two hours, which means I don’t need to bring too much water, but some really helps. I also don’t want to feel weighted down.

When I run with the Trail Mix I barely notice it’s there because it’s snug fit and light weight. It doesn’t bounce at all like other drink belts. I like the molded holsters make it easy to get the flasks in and out without slowing down too much.

The Trail Mix carries two 10oz flasks which seems to be the perfect amount for a 2hr run. I could also see myself using this for a half-marathon trail run.

Two flasks also means I have the option of filling one with straight water and one with sport drink. I really like the size of the flasks, I find other hydration belts flasks are too small and easier to drop. I also like the placement of the flasks, I don’t want something on the side of my hips or in front that I’m going to hit with my hands. I also like having a buckle as opposed to Velcro because it’s more secure and will not wear out over time.

There’s also a couple of handy pockets at the back, one that zips closed so it’s great for valuables like keys, phone and ID. The other is great for a pack of energy gel.

Thank you USANA

For some of us, the racing season has not yet begun.  However, here at MelRad, several of our sponsors have already stepped up to the plate big time.  The first company to do so, starting months ago now, was USANA Nutritionals with ongoing monthly shipments of their awesome HealthPak.

USANA HealthPak

A HealthPak contains 4-8 weeks worth of conveniently prepackaged vitamins and antioxidants, so there is no sorting or counting involved.  This is perfect for the busy triathlete who is juggling countless hours of training with a full-time job and still trying to maintain some semblance of a real life.

As with most vitamins, I didn’t think I’d notice much difference from just taking a boring multivitamin out of a 1000 count container from the bulk store, but I really have noticed a difference with these USANA supplements.  The most obvious change has been shortened recovery time needed after hard workouts.  I don’t know the science behind it, but I definitely feel better the next day when I remember to take my USANA supplements.

The other thing I have noticed is that I’ve not been getting sick.  My fiancee has been ill twice already this year and I have yet to have any sign of the sniffles or a sore throat (knock on wood).  I also travel a lot for work (I’m writing this on a plane), so I worry about airborne germs, but so far so good.

GU Just Keeps Getting Better

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Boy-o-boy, how do they keep doing it?  Every time I get a new flavor from the wonderful folks at GU Energy Labs, I always wonder how they will get any better.  Low and behold, each time, they always out-do themselves.  Back when they came out with Roctane, and I got my hands on Blue Berry Pomegranate, I was in heaven.  An awesome flavor in a GU with an extra punch.  Perfect.  Can’t be out-done.

Then, they came out with Pineapple Roctane.  The first time I tried it was during a training ride up in Pisgah.  I instantly had a new favorite flavor.  The only way, I thought, that it could get any better is if I had a new regular GU to go along with my new favorite Roctane.

As if some little fairy was listening to my thoughts and flew to the GU labs to let them know, it wasn’t long that I received a box on my doorstep with yet another new flavor, Jet Blackberry.  Quickly opening a package, I tried one on for size without even taking a close look at the label.  Devouring the packet in sheer delight, I had found my new favorite GU.  I was even more delighted by the fact that it has 2x caffeine.  Along with the Pineapple Roctane, the pair were now a duo at my command.  Surely, this combo cannot be out-done.

Fast forward to today and the box I just received.

Jet Blackberry now has a flavor that will give it a run for it’s money: Mandarin Orange.  With 1x caffeine, it doesn’t have the same caffeinated boost as Jet Blackberry, but man it is tasty.  I downed a packet just before my trainer workout and I absolutely love it.

Folks at GU, I don’t know how you keep coming up with more and more awesome products.  Whatever it is that keeps you guys and gals inspired, it’s working.  Keep on doing it.  We love you out here!
